The incident happened during what could be considered his first time venturing deep into the mountains to confirm something. It was when he was halfway there and turned into an area with no clear path.

Though this was one of the locations listed in his booklet for verification, its difficulty was pretty low, so it was treated as his beginner’s experience.

As mentioned at the start, no matter what, he’d always hire a guide to accompany him. This time, there was also an uncle-figure along for the trip.

The guide they found was an older indigenous person… a hunter, perhaps?

This guide initially looked at the spot my friend specified and said the trip would take just three days. But after sizing up my friend, he added, “With this little guy here, it’ll probably take four days. We’ll need to prepare accordingly.” (Did my friend smell like a newbie?)

A few days before departure, the original plan was delayed by two or three days. That’s because, early in the morning, the guide went to the mountain entrance and stood there—eyes closed, as if listening to something. Then he turned to them and said it’d be better to wait a few more days before heading up.

It sounded mysterious, but since he was the guide, they had to trust the professional.

Since they were going deep into the mountains, their luggage was heavy, but they had to bring everything necessary. After all, they might need to sleep in the mountains for three nights.

They usually woke up early and made sure to find a resting spot early too, as temperatures in the mountains drop quickly after the afternoon.

If they couldn’t find a suitable spot by then, it’s not like they couldn’t sleep or rest—it’d just be a bit miserable. But thanks to the guide’s help, this trip went very smoothly.

After safely reaching the destination, they updated the booklet’s status and started the journey back.

Friend: “It was at this point I realized that going up the mountain and coming back down are completely different experiences. Not just the paths we took, but even the scenery felt entirely different.”

Me: “Is it really that dramatic? You couldn’t even recognize it?”

Friend: “If I could memorize every tree’s appearance and had a photographic memory, maybe I’d have a chance, huh?”

Since the timing of going up and coming back wasn’t the same, and my friend’s stamina couldn’t match the uncle or the guide, they descended slowly.

As he carefully followed the path downward, he heard the guide let out a “err” sound.

The guide told the two of them to stop climbing for a moment, then slowly walked over to a spot about five meters away, where the path seemed blocked by bushes and branches.

Friend: (Huh? Why not take the path next to it that looks walkable?)

The guide simply hacked at the bushes, lifted them aside, and cleared them out—revealing a proper mountain trail.

Guide: “You can’t take that other path. This is the one we came up on.”

Uncle: “So it’s…?”

Guide: “Nothing much. Something likes to play tricks, that’s all. Either way, we should rest early today.”

My friend was still a bit shocked. Without the guide, he had no idea what would’ve happened if they’d taken that fork.

After passing through one area, the guide told them to wait.

Guide: “You two wait here for a bit. I remember there’s a spot nearby where we can rest. I’ll come get you once I find it. Until then, ‘don’t wander off.’”

So, the two of them agreed, and the guide quickly disappeared into another patch of bushes.

Not long after, a fog slowly rolled in over the mountain. Though it crept in gradually, it still obscured their vision completely.

They put on their headlamps and stayed put, waiting patiently for the guide to return.

After a while, the fog still hadn’t lifted. If it had just been my friend alone, he’d probably have been scared to death.

Fortunately, uncle was there with him, which made him feel more grounded.

Suddenly, my friend noticed a figure in the thick fog, waving at them as if gesturing “come over here.”

A voice called out:

Guide: “Hey, you two, come this way. The resting spot’s over here.”

My friend didn’t think twice and was about to step forward when the uncle grabbed him and covered his mouth.

Startled, he looked at the uncle, who was staring silently into the fog.

My friend turned back to the figure in the mist—it flickered faintly, then slowly faded away.

The moment it vanished, the guide emerged from the opposite direction of the figure, looked at them, and said, “This way.”

Friend: “The second he popped out, I nearly peed myself from the shock :) .”

The guide led them to a simple worker’s shack?!

According to the guide, it’s not like the mountains are completely devoid of human presence—some people rely on the mountains for their livelihood.

So that night, they rested in the shack. Surprisingly, there was even some food inside they could eat. (Uh, no payment required?)

The next day, they continued their descent. No more strange incidents occurred, and they made it back safely.

Friend: “I feel like they only started acting up when the guide wasn’t with us…Thank goodness we followed his instructions from the start and didn’t wander off.”

Me: “You idiot, if it weren’t for your uncle, you’d have been led astray already, okay? You’d be on the news by now—‘One idiot got lost in the mountains and needs rescue.’”

Friend: “Oh? I forgot to mention one thing.”

Me: “What? (・Д・ )?”

Friend: “The next morning, at my request, the guide took us back to where we’d been standing. Turns out, if we’d followed that shadowy figure’s direction and taken a few more steps, we’d have fallen straight down.”

Me: “…So I almost would never see you again…”

Friend: “Huh? It’s not that serious. The drop was only about a meter.”

Me: “…Damn it! You tricked my emotions! (╬⊙д⊙) ⊂ 彡 ☆ ))゚Д゚)・∵”

(Guide: “Didn’t I say something just likes to play tricks?”)
